Summary

Flavia Paiva
"In business and in life you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate" (Chester L. Karrass)
Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, a metropolitan area bigger than NYC. I knew in my childhood that I would be in the STEM field (a bit biased by an Engineer dad). Since I'm a single child and both of my parents worked, I was used to playing by myself. So, without even realizing it, my communicative and creative sides started to develop (also a bit biased by a Public Relations mom). I was always fascinated by writing stories and the chance of 'giving life' to the characters. So, I published 2 young readers books in 2011 and 2013 (Lua and Walter are the names of my protagonists). I went to college at Mackenzie University and graduated with a Chemistry degree in 2014. After some Engineering experience, I ended up working for Purchasing (Purchasing and Engineering shared the same floor in my first work experience). Lucky me! I couldn't have been happier! Purchasing pushed my detailed STEM side, while forcing me to be creative and gave me the chance to communicate with several internal and external stakeholders all day, everyday! In 2015, I accepted a proposal that changed my career and my life! I started to work for a start-up company in Brazil. While developing my career in Purchasing, with a STEM base, I missed the business side of formal education. So, I started to pursue my MBA in 2017. Late in 2017, the start-up company offered me the chance to move to Wisconsin, USA. My friends call me a "I'M IN" person. If I believe in something and I'm passionate about it, I just go for it! Fear is the fuel for change, and I'm energized by it. I have been living in the USA for almost 4 years now and I had to learn everything all over again. I had the priceless chance to re-start my life at 30 years old and again, I couldn't be happier! Of course, I miss friends and family, but my heart is now here, with my husband and daughters!Towards the end of 2020, I was still working in the corporate world, and I had the chance to start my own consulting business. Since change is my fuel, I went for it - Flavia Paiva Procurement Solutions was founded with the mission of disseminate quality Procurement content and delivery results based on knowledge acquired through more than 11 years of experience in Procurement processes and procedures in large multi-national companies in different fields (cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical and consumer goods), countries (Brazil, USA, China and Germany among many) and a proven tracker of successful KPIs and leadership skills. I have the ability to take Procurement to the next level, through commitment and passion!

Timeline

  1. Founder and Consultant, Flavia Paiva Procurement Solutions

My debut as an entrepreneur, I'm actually working with a couple different clients in Brazil and the USA. I'm an author of Industry publications and I`m serving small new businesses with my Procurement Expertise (TCO, new vendor, negotiation, NDAs, contracts, etc.).

  2. Sr. Buyer NPD/ Strategic Sourcing, Kohler Company

Hybrid role between New Products Development and Strategic Sourcing. Ensuring the launch of new products on time and on budget, I had the chance to work in very innovative categories. On the Strategic side, I had the chance to develop and apply the category strategy for different categories. This role helped me improve my leadership and time management skills, dealing with multiple projects at a time, and handling different priorities in a dynamic environment.

  3. MBA Graduation, FGV

Fundação Getúlio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  4. Move to Wisconsin, USA

Born and raised in tropical Brazil, I saw snow for the first time in 2018. The lowest average temperature in Brazil is around 40F, so my body also had to adapt to not freeze at all time! I discovered I knew "business English", but the first couple "happy hours" with work colleagues were a disaster and I used to laugh, just to be included - I had no idea what the joke was! And of course, by moving to Wisconsin, I learned the amount of drinks people have to get warm! I can't complain about the old fashion or dive bars! Moving to the USA was by far the best decision - and biggest risk- I took, but I couldn't be happier!

  5. Purchasing Manager/Sr. Buyer, Kohler Brazil

My first corporate leadership experience. Kohler was a start-up in Brazil and its strategy was to hire the director level, skip the management level, and hire sr. buyer levels who were ready to be a manager, but were still hands-on enough for a start-up. I organized and structured the Purchasing area, being the leader of a team of 3 people (2 buyers and 1 purchasing analyst), while managing the direct materials categories and the KPIs. I also had the chance to perform as a CapEx and services buyer. This was the job that led me to the offer of working and living abroad

  6. Regional Strategic Buyer , BASF

The strongest and most developed Purchasing area I had the pleasure and the opportunity to work. The company that solidified my Strategic Sourcing knowledge. I was responsible for the management of several categories, and where I learned different strategies in the several negotiation training programs I attended.

  7. College Graduation, Mackenzie University

    Chemistry - São Paulo, Brazil

  8. Materials and Services Buyer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical

My first experience with implementing a SAP system, and all the work that needs to be done in the background to make it happen! Also, my first experience as an indirect buyer, where I had to learn how to deal with a lot of subjective evaluations for the HR, finance, IT and events categories. I had the amazing opportunity to develop and host the Supplier Relationship (SRM) program in which we evaluated and awarded the best suppliers. I also worked on the Dual Sourcing program to mitigate the risk of single sourced items.

  9. Book release Nem sempre acontece

Lua and Walter, my fictional characters from the 1st book, are back together. Now they are teenagers that travel with a group of friends to participate in an International Science fair (in the USA!). Lots of drama, confusion, and a lot of fun in an ever-changing situation that isn’t always what it looks like - that is actually the name of the book in English " Not everything that happens in Lua’s life is what it looks like”.

  10. Buyer - Packaging and Raw Material, Avon Cosmetics

My first real experience in Purchasing. My Purchasing school, and the company that put me in contact with my mentors and the people who I still reach out to when I want to have a real knowledge sharing conversation. Where I learned how to manage a category, how to measure and identify correct KPIs to use, how to calculate TCO, freight modal, how to find and onboard new vendors, and how to make your voice be heard! I had the chance to apply global strategies in a local environment, as well as start to build my knowledge about gate stages and the New Products Development cycle, along with acting as a Project Manager for smaller projects.

  11. Book release Lua...O Anjo Terrestre

This was my first book, and the English translated name is "Lua...the Angel from the Earth". Lua is the protagonist, she was a very poor girl who is abandoned by her mother. Walter is a rich boy, who decides to run away from home. Lua and Walter meet, and a great friendship develops. While they try to reunite, they needed strength to come back to their homes and families.

  12. Volunteer event Breast Cancer Awareness

was working for Avon, and their institutional area strongly promoted breast cancer awareness. By that time, I was studying at Mackenzie University, which hosted the "Mackenzie volunteer" annual program. I decided to put together a volunteer event to combine efforts from both Mackenzie and Avon. I led a team of 15 people (3 from Avon, 10 from Mackenzie and 2 contractors). Avon sponsored us with materials and makeup items. I set up a booth in the food court of the University where more than 500 visitors came, and were received by part of the team and oriented on how to do the self-exam by a volunteer doctor. The other part of the team went to a nearby cancer hospital to visit people during their chemotherapy sessions. We focused on women and making them feel confident in their appearance - giving them makeup, having their nails done, teaching how to tie a scarf on their heads, etc. It's an unforgettable memory that made me a better leader and a better human!

Questions & Answers

Why did you choose your profession?
Purchasing is usually a profession that you don't chose (Have you ever heard a child saying " I want to be a buyer"?). This is the type of profession that you are somehow chosen. I happen to work in Packaging Engineering which was located in the same floor of Purchasing area and due to my commercial and communication vein, it was a natural transition. I was chosen to be a professional buyer, but after years I CHOSE purchasing as my career and there's nothing else I'd rather do!
Who are your main influences?
Although there are some "famous people" like Kamala Harris, Chester Karrass and Malala Yousafzai, my main influences are people from my circle, one of my bosses intelligence, my mom's positivity, humility and resilience, my dad's entrepreneurship, my husband`s leadership and strategic thinking and all the bad bosses I had, that taught me what not to be.
Describe your greatest accomplishment.
On 2017 I received an offer to move to another country (USA). Of course I was afraid, but the excitement for the opportunity spoke louder and I came. I had to adapt and re-learn a lot of things again, from acronyms, to how to drive in the snow. After a couple years, I'm so proud of how I was able to adapt to a different culture, while building new relationships and delivering excellent professional results.
What tools do you use?
Different ERP systems, several different KPIs, but the most powerful tool that I use is communication and transparency!
What are you working on right now?
Many different authoring projects, besides training material reviews (to ensure we have the correct bridge between academia and corporations) and procurement services for small companies and start-ups.
What are your long-term goals?
Although I like the consulting business and working for my own, I love the structure of working for another company, so my professional long-term goal is to be a CPO.

RPAs and the Soft Skills

It has become increasingly common to hear about technological disruptions. Every day there is a new tool, software, methodology or someone trying to do something different. And this is excellent!
Technological disruptions tend to cause astonishment and fear. Imagine the reaction of the first person who saw a working television or who received a fax message. Imagine the first person who received an email or when a cell phone rang for the first time.
Now do another exercise: Try to...
